Planning a cruise stop in Cannes? Hereâs how to make the most of your one day on the French Riviera, including what to expect, tips for tender ports, and a stress-free way to explore Nice.
When your cruise docks off the coast of Cannes, France, you’ll likely arrive by tender boat rather than docking directly at the pier. The Cannes cruise port is located in the Vieux Port (Old Port), which is close to the city center and just a short walk from the famous Boulevard de la Croisette, making it easy to step right into the heart of the action.
With limited time and so much to see, having a plan is essential to make the most of your day in this iconic French Riviera town.
From wandering the charming Old Town and vibrant markets to relaxing on the beaches, here’s what to expect and how to enjoy a stress-free day trip to Cannes from your cruise port.

At a Glance: What to Expect on a Cruise Day in the French Riviera
đCannes is a tender port. Budget extra time for getting to shore.
đA shore excursion to Nice is a great way to explore with less stress.
đExpect a mix of sightseeing and local charm â slow travel works well here!
When our cruise docked off the coast of Cannes, France, I felt what most people probably do⊠excited, but a little overwhelmed.
The French Riviera has this reputation for glitz, history, and serious beauty. But with only 8 hours and a tender port situation, I knew we needed a game plan that made sense.
The French Riviera (or CĂŽte dâAzur, if you want to sound fancy) is that iconic stretch of southeastern France where the Mediterranean sparkles and the towns have welcomed royalty, artists, and movie stars for over a century.
Cities like Nice, Cannes, Monaco, and Saint-Tropez have been a top vacation choice of the elite since the 1800s.

Fun fact: the whole âRiviera as a luxury getawayâ concept actually started with British aristocrats who came to escape their miserable winters. They built elegant villas and hotels, and the destination just kept growing in glamour.
But let me tell you, modern-day cruise stops here are less champagne wishes and more letâs make the most of these few hours before the ship sails away.
Is Cannes Cruise Port a Tender Port?
Yeah… somehow many people miss that.
So hereâs what that means: your cruise ship wonât dock directly at the pier. Instead, it anchors offshore and uses smaller boats called tenders to shuttle passengers to land. Itâs a bit of a process and honestly? Quite the Titanic-esque vibes!

Translation for cruise travelers? Budget extra time. On our Norwegian Viva cruise, the first tender started running at 7am, but this varies by cruise line. It added about 45 minutes round trip for us, and it’s not just a quick walk-off-the-ship situation.
Here’s what I learned from spending a day at the French Riviera that can help you make the most of yours.
How We Approached the Day (And Why It Worked)
We started our day in the French Riviera with a 4-hour sightseeing tour of Nice and it was perfect, especially for first-time cruisers. Mainly, this is why I would recommend it:
- No transportation stress and we knew we’d be back on time
- Gave Carlos a break from our go-go-go itinerary
- Hit the Nice highlights with a guide who shared local stories we wouldnât have known on our own
Pro tip: If Cannes isn’t your final port, I highly recommend booking shore excursions directly with your cruise line. They’re guaranteed to wait for you if there are any delays, which gives you peace of mind that independent tours can’t match.

Nice: A UNESCO City That Stole My Heart
This might surprise you…Nice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! It earned the title for its Belle Ăpoque architecture and reputation as the “winter resort city of the Riviera.”
So, if you’re just as obsessed with checking off some UNESCO sites as I am, Nice is definitely a must-see.
Our visit started on the Promenade des Anglais, a stunning waterfront stretch lined with 20th-century villas and a blend of Belle Ăpoque, art deco, neoclassical, and modern designs.
Itâs beautiful in that timeless, elegant way that makes you slow down and stare. It’s also the kind of sight that can have you daydreaming about Hollywood glitz and glam.

But the real charm hit when we made it to Niceâs Old Town, especially the Cours Saleya market. If you’re there TuesdayâSunday, youâll catch the MarchĂ© aux Fleursâknown as the flower market, though youâll find fruits and veggies too.
Visiting the flower market in Nice was one of the things I was most excited to experience!
But here’s something I didnât know:
Nice had the worldâs first wholesale cut flower market in 1897! Growers brought their blooms down from the hills each morning. After wholesalers did their thing, locals could come buy what was left.
Thereâs even a story about Tsar Nicholas II ordering two whole train cars of Nice flowers to recreate a parade in St. Petersburg. I mean… isn’t that iconic?!

We then grabbed a relaxed French breakfast and wandered through the narrow, colorful streets of old town. Even with the crowded areas, I could still feel the easy rhythm of life in this Mediterranean gem, which is something that I absolutely loved.
After exploring Nice’s charming streets and soaking in the Mediterranean atmosphere, we headed back to Cannes with plenty of time before our ship’s departure.
Back in Cannes
Right as we returned to Cannes, the sky opened up and gave us a full-on Riviera rainstorm. My plan to explore more of Cannes? Derailed.
And so did the photos that I so much wanted, right in front of the Cannes Film Festival mural because the rain didn’t allow for much. So⊠this is what I ended up with.

But you know what? This is where the magic of slow travel kicks in, even on a cruise stop.
Instead of stressing about missed sights, we ducked into a local cafĂ©, warmed up with cafĂ© au lait, and split the flakiest, most buttery croissants Iâve ever tasted.
We sat. We savored. We watched locals go about their day and it was just what we needed!
But what I loved even more? The contrast.
Yes, Cannes is a world-famous destination of red carpets and flashing lights. But itâs also just a coastal French town where locals stop to drink coffee, buy baguettes and just go about their day.
Thatâs the side I liked best.

Final Thoughts
Letâs be honest, 8 hours isnât enough to truly experience the French Riviera. But a cruise itinerary including the Cannes cruise port can be enough to fall in love with the charm, culture, and this side of Mediterranean magic. It’s one of the best ways to experience it and decide if you want to come back for more.
If youâre stopping in Cannes on your cruise, Iâd say: donât overcomplicate it. Choose a strategy that fits your energy level for the day, embrace a slower pace, and let the Riviera work its magic.
