6 Romantic Adventures to Experience on Your North Georgia Getaway

North Georgia is full of romantic places for couples. You have waterfalls, cozy towns, scenic views, wineries, and beautiful places to stay surrounded by the mountains.

We ended our trip with a stay in a unique glamping dome nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, which added a cozy touch to our North Georgia getaway (more on that later), but here are six experiences that can make your couples getaway truly special.

Romantic Things to Do Around Helen & North Georgia

After many years of going on road trips to the Peach State, I ended up falling in love with Georgia. So much so that 2025 marks the year when we moved from sunny Florida to picturesque North Georgia. So, you’re in the right place for all the tips you need for an amazing trip to Georgia.

A visit to Helen, Georgia is a great place to start your trip and can certainly be one of the most romantic getaway weekend ideas for couples, which is exactly what we did.

And since there are so many things to do in Helen, I figured that sharing the itinerary for our couples’ getaway would be helpful when planning your own stay in the North Georgia Mountains. 

1. Spend a Night in the Mountains

A quiet stay in the mountains can allow you to enjoy a nature walk, dinner by the river, S’mores in the fire pit, and play board games. You can also take this intimate space to spend quality time with your partner.

2. Have Breakfast at a German bakery in the Alpine City of Helen

Helen is known as the heart of North Georgia and it’s very romantic for couples! Being that it’s a Bavarian-style town, starting the day off with breakfast at a German bakery is definitely the best way to start your day.

For complete breakfast options and all the Bavarian vibes, you can check out Hofer’s Bakery. And for delicious bagels and great coffee, Schatzie’s Cafe is your place to go.

And while you’re here, take a stroll around the cute German-inspired town.

3. See Dukes Creek Falls: A Beautiful North Georgia Waterfall

For couples looking for waterfalls and easy hikes, the good news is that there are hundreds of waterfalls that you can visit in North Georgia! Which ones to visit will depend on how much you want to hike.

One of the easiest waterfall hikes near Helen is Dukes Creek Falls. For a Georgia romantic getaway in which you can divide your time into many different activities, choose the waterfalls with the shorter distance hikes.

If you’re not into hiking, you can also view Dukes Creek Falls from the observation deck which is a short walk from its parking area.

4. Visit a Winery: One of the Best Activities for Couples

Many might be surprised to know that there are numerous wineries in North Georgia. In fact, many of these are award-winning and have the perfect atmosphere to enjoy while on a romantic getaway with your significant other and visiting a winery is one of the most romantic things to do near Helen GA.

Yonah Mountain Vineyards was our pick and we had an amazing time. Unfortunately, the wine cave tours were not available during our visit. Just make sure you call ahead of time when planning your epic trip to see what’s available.

5. Walk Around Smith Lake (Unicoi Lake) at Unicoi State Park

For couples who love the outdoors, a visit to Unicoi Lake might just be one of the best things to do in Helen and it’s very much worth it.

The feeling you get when experiencing the stunning mountain views with the love of your life is beyond amazing. There’s just something about mountains that makes it all so magically perfect!

6. Visit a Chocolate Factory For a Sweet Experience

What’s a little romantic getaway without some chocolates, right? In the Alpine City of Helen, you will find some super cute candy stores.

But it was the Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen that caught our attention. We had a variety of flavors and all of them were delicious!

Planning Your Romantic Getaway in North Georgia

For us, finding a place to stay in Helen with availability in February, was a priority and we booked 2 months in advance.

Due to the high popularity of North Georgia, I highly recommend booking within 2-4 months in advance, especially if you’re looking more towards a summer camping or fall getaway experience.

There are some cute places to stay near Hiawassee, just 20 minutes north of Alpine Helen, the picturesque German-inspired town well-known for its annual Oktoberfest festivities and romantic setting.

Where We Stayed: A Romantic Glamping Dome in North Georgia

For our North Georgia getaway to the mountains, we chose to stay at a glamping dome. Glamping is something that both of us love and with Carlos needing more space and certain amenities, it’s much more feasible than camping.

By staying at a glamping dome, we were able to sleep in a comfortable bed and have a private restroom with a shower just a few feet away.

Some campgrounds have accessibility to full restrooms and others don’t, which is something to keep in mind when choosing your glamping or camping destinations.

Final Thoughts

North Georgia is full of romantic experiences that go way beyond where you sleep. From slow mornings in the mountains to wandering through Helen and chasing scenic views, it’s the kind of place that naturally invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment together.

Staying in a glamping dome isn’t for everyone, but even one night in a cozy setup like this can add something special to your trip.
